We demand the release of Nikolai Zimin and other trade union leaders of Belarus!

Nikolai ZiminOn Saturday, 15 August, details of the detention of Nikolai Zimin became known. He is the former chairman of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union (BITU). Nikolai was detained in the remand center of the city of Lyuban, Minsk region. It is reported that Zimin was severely beaten. He can not get around practically. There was not provided with medical assistance for him. In addition, the former head of the BITU has a number of diseases and needs to take medications.

Nikolai Zimin, chairman of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union in 2011—2019, head of the All-Belarusian Strike Committee in 1991, was sentenced on 11 August 2020 by the Soligorsk District Court to 25 days of arrest for participating in a peaceful rally against election fraud.

The Confederation of Labor of Russia demands from the Belarusian authorities the immediate release of Nikolai Zimin from the pre-trial detention center, as well as other trade union leaders who have received various terms of administrative arrest in recent days. Among them are Sergei Gurlo (chairman of the organization of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union at “Belshina”) and Maksim Sereda (chairman of the organization of the Independent Trade Union of Miners in the Logistics Department at “Belaruskali”).

The Confederation of Labor of Russia demands an end to repression against independent workers’ trade unions and declares its readiness to provide all-round support to the international campaign for the release of Nikolai Zimin and other trade union leaders of Belarus.
